Basketball tryouts are just two days away. Eric has been practicing all year to improve his game; varsity is a huge step up for him from the school’s “B” team. Damian, naturally talented and athletic has other concerns for now. He just got a new video game and wants to have it completed before the start of the season; plus he’s already been given the word from the head coach he will be the starting point guard for the varsity team this year.
In life the winners and losers are determined by how well you prepare for opportunities when they arrive. Life constantly gives us chances to improve ourselves emotionally, mentally, physically, financially, personally, or spiritually; but the question will always remain are you prepared to take advantage when opportunity presents itself. No need to claim “life isn’t fair” or “I’m not that lucky enough” for that job to come my way when you haven’t studied, practiced, or work progressively to increase your self-worth. Let’s stop making excuses for our lack of commitment to being progressive, and take responsibility for our lack of preparation.
Make a determination today to start preparing properly for your next level in life, whether it is taking a class, researching that business, opening a book, or picking up a ball.
The gym is packed and the crowd is buzzing with anticipation, there is a ton of energy in the building. The announcer begins calling out the starting line-ups. The story may not go as expected; Eric is announced as the starting point guard for the varsity team while Damian watches. During try-outs and practice Eric was able to out hustle Damian, he was able to out defend Damian, and he understood how to use his body better than Damian. Eric acquired skills that made him a better player overall. Damian depended on his natural gifts, Eric depended on hard work and determination, both ingredients to success. He has proven proper preparation super cedes talents and gifts that are not groomed.
