At the Root of it All

I’m not much of a gardener. Actually, I’m pretty good at killing a plant, even when it is not my intention. Often times while the plant is dying my wife will come in behind me and revive the plant’s life. The thing about that situation that always perplexed me was how she could bring back to life something that was dead or quickly headed to death. One day it dawned on me; the root of the plant still thrived underneath the surface and at any point that root with the proper care could bring life back to the plant.

Same is true with our thought process. Simply saying I’m changing, is only a surface change. The root of your thought process is still the same. That root will eventually re-grow and the old you will again arise. However, to truly change or eliminate that old thought process, the plant must be destroyed. To destroy that plant we must uproot the plant. The same will have to be done with your thought process. It can’t simply be an external recitation out of your mouth of what has happened, it has to be an internal up root of your thoughts. It will be painful and will require some work just like tugging and digging up the root of a plant is work, but any worthwhile change is painful. At times seems torturous to yourself, but it’s necessary for the change. Bear in mind the deeper the root is in you, the more digging you have to do and the more painful the uprooting will be. Don’t be discouraged by this, for the deeper we have to dig to up root the old thoughts, the deeper the new better thoughts will now be buried.

The beauty of change is that on the surface no one can see it. Just as the new root has been planted, one can only see that old dirt of you they have always known. Unknown to them, down in the root, in your thought process you are changing and becoming more. Staying consistent to change and fertilizing that new thought process eventually leads to a budding on the surface of that dirt that people will begin to see as a new you. Just keep watering and feeding it and that plant you were before will no longer exist. Now all people will see is the lovely rose you have blossomed into.
