A Change of Plans

Recently you may have heard about the “quarterback controversy” with the Philadelphia Eagles and Coach Andy Reid’s decision to name Michael Vick the starting quarterback over Kevin Kolb. After an injury to Kevin Kolb, Coach Andy Reid stated firmly that when he was healthy again Kolb would be the starter. Michael Vick’s role as the starting quarterback was only temporary. Coach Reid even stated this before the game where Michael Vick was set to start, showing that he was determined to stick to his plan.

Then things changed.

After filling in for the injured Kolb and nearly leading Philadelphia back to a win against Green Bay, and playing a great game and winning against Detroit, Michael Vick was named the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. His level of play caused Coach Reid to change his plans.

Our everyday lives can be just like this. We go into a situation with a plan, and then things change. As men, we must be flexible enough to change with the situations while still keeping the ultimate goal in mind. While it’s very important to have a plan, we must remember that sometimes it’s ok, and even necessary to change the plan. When you’re driving your car and you come to a roadblock, do you take the detour around the roadblock or do you drive through it? Just as we change our path to drive around the roadblock, we must change our plans to navigate around various situations.

One thing to keep in mind is that even when we change our plans, we shouldn’t give up on our goal. Coach Reid’s goal is to win games. He may not win the games with the quarterback that he originally planned to, but his change in plans still works toward the same goal. When we come to a roadblock, we may have to take a different route but we’re still driving towards the same location. It’s ok to change plans and make adjustments. Just make sure you keep working towards your goal!
