Let’s look at the advantages of doing a little extra. Viewing it from a customer service perspective, often times it makes the difference between a repeat customer and a one time shopper. Instead of just greeting a customer or giving them a typical response, try smiling when you do it. It’s just a little extra, but it will make a difference. Over time smiling will become your standard. Next, add a kind word to go along with your smile. People will notice how positive you are and want to be around you more. Now you’ve made smiling and having a kind word a habit. As a result of doing a little extra, now management begins to notice you. It won’t be because you told them, but the people that matter the most, the customers, are raving about you! Sales are increasing, costs are going down, and you’re given a promotion and the opportunity to teach other employees how to give a little extra. Because you’ve made doing extra a habit, you may think that you’re just ordinary, but others will see your work as extraordinary.
Each time you feel that your “extra” has become the standard, do a little more. Inch by inch, step by step you will continually become more extraordinary. You will stand out more and more just because one day you decided to do just a little more!
